Should it be "How do you do?" or "I am fine, thank you"?

If you like the person " I'll do you and you can see how do I do"

If not, " Do yourself moron"

How do you do means 你好吗? So in Chinese, some people will respond with 你好, and some people will respond with 我很好谢谢. There's no ritual to it. If someone asks you how you are, you can tell them how you are. Or if you're fun, you can tell them you like reverse cowgirl.

how do u do = pleased to meet u. it's a polite way that u can use when u first introduced to someone. Originally, in the 1600s, this expression was an inquiry after a person's health or standing, how do you do meaning "how do you fare?" Today we usually express this as How are you? or How are you doing? or How goes it? or How's it going? Even more general are the slangy locutions How are things? or How's tricks? All of these greetings date from the first half of the 1900s.

Ah, but the real UK utterance is "Alright?" (back in the day, this began as the formal "You alright?"). The response is "Alright" Except that's wrong - it's normally shortened to "Right?, with the response "Right". Often, person one gives a shrug of the shoulders. Either or, more usually, both persons, just turn the right into a grunt, or, at best, something between "Right" and a grunt.

Funniest thing in the UK is when drinkers manage to slur the grunt!!!!!

What language texts never teach you!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Back in the day" is a British idiom for " a long time ago".

Nobody has answered her question yet.

Where did you hear "How do you do?". A test?

I don't know about the rest of the English-speaking world, but in North America, "How do you do?" is very rarely asked. Usually it's "How are you?" or "How's it going?".

To answer your question, I believe the "correct" answer "How do you do?" was "How do you do?". But as Jaret said, you can technically answer it however you like.

And yeah, you don't have to say "I'm fine, thank you." when you're asked how you are. As Jaret said, you can technically answer it however you like."I'm alright", "Not bad", "Terrible", "Great", or "Fantastic" are all acceptable.

I think, on those rare occasions when formally asked how we are, the responses mostly used are "fine", "Ok", maybe "alright" (but see my other entry). Certainly, the original utterance isn't, in any real sense, an inquiry after one's health. This said, in UK (a land of coughs, and colds, etc), we do quite often reply "a little under the weather". That is a common idiom for not 100% well.

I've just remembered. Back in the day when the formal "How do you do?" was asked. We used to reply in a formal set-piece way: "Very well, thank you". That included when we were half-dead!

@C 苦歹死 ,thank you, I was asked by a colleague, that's why I was puzzeled, my teacher used to tell me that "How do you do?" is used when we meet someone for teh first time, it is formal "Hello."..............

    Merry Christmas!

    Hey Summer,

OK the true answer is that "How do you do?" is a British expression and the correct etiquette would be to reply with "How do you do?" As you said it means hello and is very formal, it is one of those etiquette rules that have died out over the years. I am sure it is still used at extremely formal occasions within the bigwigs of society or prehaps between people who think a lot of theselves. In an informal setting feel free to answer in any way you wish.

    Q. How do you do?

    Ans. Very Busy...

Thats totally incorrect way in my opinion, however thats the most standard response I get in workplace....heard it so many times now, that I am confused why it is a wrong response..it almost sounds like the most obvious way to respond now after being in China for so many years..

No offense, 'how do you do' sounds gay as hell. Why put two do's in a four word sentence ? People who use this greeting sound like complete idiots.

Also, every album with the same title pretty much sucked.

The answer to "how do you do?" is "how do you do?".

It is not "fine thanks" it is not "alright, and you?" it is not "yeah, not bad"

it is: "How do you do?"

    ffs.....

"How do you do?" is indeed an old and infrequently used formal expression. The answer to which should be to spit directly into the speakers face and walk away.

Hope this cultural pearl of wisdom helps in your next interdepartmental meeting/business meal.
